Dental Crowns (or 'Dental Caps')
Dental crowns are fixed prosthetic devices that are designed to cover the entire tooth. Unlike removable devices such as dentures, crowns are cemented onto existing teeth or implants, and can only be removed by a dentist.
A crown is used to entirely cover or “cap” a damaged tooth. Besides strengthening a damaged tooth, a crown can be used to improve its appearance, shape or alignment. A crown can also be placed on top of an implant to provide a tooth-like shape and structure for function. Porcelain or ceramic crowns can be matched to the color of your natural teeth. Other materials include gold and metal alloys, acrylic and ceramic. These alloys are generally stronger than porcelain and may be recommended for back teeth. Porcelain bonded to a metal shell is often used because it is both strong and attractive.
Dental crowns can be used to:
– Replace cracked or leaking fillings
– Replace large fillings
– Restore broken teeth
– Restore dental implants
– Restore teeth with root canals
Crowns made of tooth-colored porcelain are ideal to camouflage imperfections in your smile. They can easily cover up large visible fillings, discolored, cracked or rotated teeth. That perfect smile can be achieved in only a few appointments!
We also offer the latest in ceramic zirconium “Lava” and/or “EMAX” crowns for our patients. These new crowns offer the most natural and vibrant look possible using absolutely no metal in their fabrication. Patients who demand absolutely the best modern dentistry can offer often choose these restorations.
While crowns are designed to last a lifetime, they do sometimes come loose or fall out. Practice good hygiene and visit us at Dental World of Marietta regularly for checkups and professional cleanings.
